Alabama Jack’s in Key Largo is the manliest restaurant around

The honky-tonk sign out front proclaims the location as Downtown Card Sound

You don’t have to be a man to love Alabama Jack’s. But apparently it helps.

Alabama Jack’s, the funky open-air bar and restaurant in the mangroves on Card Sound Road, is one of 45 restaurants and the only one in Florida in the running to be named the Manliest Restaurants in America by Men’s Health magazine.

Here’s what Men’s Health says about Alabama Jack’s:

Floating on a pair of barges just outside the Keys, Alabama Jack’s embodies the no-frills spirit of old Florida. You won’t even find A/C in this joint. Real men seek refreshment—and solace from the mosquitoes—at the bar where dinged-up license plates hang in tribute to out-of-staters who’ve dutifully made the pilgrimage to this open-air honky-tonk outpost since 1947.

Locals have been gathering at Alabama Jack’s  for more than 50 years. Today Card Sound Road is a toll-road through the mangrove swamps where Miami-Dade County meets Monroe County. But Card Sound was once a fishing community, full of characters and pioneers. The only remnant is Alabama Jack’s and its sign proclaiming you are in “downtown Cardsound.”

Folks arrive by boat and step onto rusting, wobbly floating docks.

We love Alabama Jack’s and have written about it before:  Here’s the past Florida Rambler story on Alabama Jack’s.

If you’re heading to the Keys and want to acquire a little Keys attitude along your way, the drive down Card Sound Road and a stop at Alabama Jack’s will do just that.

Despite that word “health” in the magazine title, you don’t come to Alabama Jack’s for health food. It’s famous for its conch fritters, sweet-potato fries and crab cakes. (You CAN get healthy grilled grouper but it’s the fried version that’s popular.)

If you want to help make Alabama Jack’s famous, here’s how to vote for it.
