Florida Rambler’s 2016 Gear and Guides Gift List
This is an interesting piece of camping equipment. While we are still testing this oven, it gets excellent reviews on Amazon (4.5 stars). The Solavore Sport is a retained-heat, box-style solar cooker. Bake, simmer, roast, dehydrate, and you can even pasteurize water while camping in the wild. Typical range is 200º to 300º F. No burning. Food retains more color, texture, moisture and nutrients. One-inch insulation means that heat stays inside while the outside is not hot to the touch. Our initial impression was this oven could be a little bulky (27″L x 19″W x 12″H) to pack with all your other gear, but there is space inside to transport the included solar reflectors and enameled steel pots with room to spare for utensils, plates and other kitchen gear, so it should pack neatly for car or boat camping, not so much for backpacking. If you are slow cooking, you do not need the reflectors, but they come in handy on cloudy or hazy days. What I like best is that it’s solar, so you don’t need to carry fuels, and you can cook almost anything, even slow-cook a whole turkey or chicken while you go for a hike or paddle a river. In addition to two porcelain enamel pots, the package includes an oven thermometer and a water pasteurization indicator (WAPI). The User Guide includes cooking instructions and recipes. $269 at Amazon.
