Bike & Hike
A seemingly endless hike deep into the Everglades awaits you along the levee on the southern boundary of the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge..
A scenic kayak outing on Turkey Creek takes you to Palm Bay’s Turkey Creek Sanctuary, where you can explore 3.5 miles of trails. Along the way, see dolphins, manatees and other wildlife.
When I visited St. Augustine recently, I discovered Princess Place Preserve, a delightful out-of-the-way historic estate that is a good place to hike, kayak, camp and see wildlife. The 1888 hunting lodge is magnificent — and has a great story of a real princess behind it.
SEBRING — Old-growth live oaks dripping with air plants and Spanish moss dominate the landscape throughout much of the 9,000-acre Highlands Hammock State Park, one of Florida’s original state parks developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. The park features lush nature trails, scenic bike riding and shady camping.
A half hour from Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Lake Louisa State Park has rolling hills, six lakes, excellent hiking, wildlife, picturesque cypress trees and swimming. The best part, though, may be the modern cabins, with rocking chairs on the porch and a view of the lake for $120 a night.
The Castle Windy Trail is a shady respite from the often brutal and never-ending sun of Cape Canaveral National Seashore, a tree-shrouded path that takes you through coastal zones of saw palmetto, live oak, sable palm and eastern red cedar.
This old-growth forest with 1,000-year-old trees is closely guarded because it is next to an FPL plant. But, with a little planning in advance, you can walk its 1.1 mile boardwalk in Martin County on free tours.
Natural beauty makes Riverbend Park in Jupiter a delightful place to explore. Its 10 miles of bike trails are particularly well suited to family bicycle outings. It’s also the site of a historic battleground from the Second Seminole War.
