Florida is a great place to bicycle – in terms of weather and terrain. But Florida lags behind when it comes to creating safe places for bicycling.
Organized bike festivals help fill a gap, by designating routes and raising local motorist awareness, while giving bicyclists beautiful places to explore by bike on longer trips.
These four fall bicycle festivals cover scenic roads and terrain. They all have long histories and hundreds of participants each year:
Sept. 1-3, 2018. It’s an annual Labor Day weekend ride based in the picturesque town of Sebring on the Lake Wales Ridge. Here’s info from the organizers.
Oct. 4-7, 2018. Mount Dora has been hosting bicyclists for more than 40 years and attracts a thousand bicyclists. Mount Dora is another charming small town. It keeps the visitors coming with a series of big festivals from fall to spring. Here’s more about the Mount Dora Bicycling Festival.
Oct. 20-21, 2018. At the end of October, the bicycle action turns to Gainesville, which has been ranked as Florida’s most bike-friendly town. The Gainesville Cycling Festival has been bringing bicyclists together in Gainesville for more than 30 years.
