White Pelican, Florida Gulf Coast
White Pelican

A bird with a wingspan of 9 feet is a sight to behold. Now picture hundreds of them, flying in formation, with Gulf Coast beaches and barrier islands as a backdrop.

That’s the migration of the White Pelican, which return to Florida every October to November.

I was lucky enough to see a bit of this migration in Sarasota one fall (visiting our daughter at my favorite college of all time, New College of Florida. )

If you’re interested in a kayak trip or a hike with an eye to seeing the pelicans, here’s more information:

White pelicans: Where to see spectacular birds wintering in Florida

Here’s a great nature photographer who has captured white pelicans at a wildlife preserve in Lakeland called Circle B Bar Reserve.
