There are few pleasures more suited to my laid-back, tropical lifestyle than camping in the Florida Keys.
RV sites in the Florida Keys are always in high demand, and tent sites are few and far between.
I personally focus on state park campgrounds for their natural settings and affordability, but there are a third fewer state park campsites than a decade ago because of hurricanes.
In the aftermath of those storms, rates at the surviving private campgrounds have gone up, sometimes substantially, topping $100 a night at most RV parks — with premium waterfront RV sites as high as $300! (Wow!)
Still, there’s a lot to be said for camping with an ocean view, island breezes and a dock for your boat in one of the most appealing destinations on earth.
We hope you find this guide useful for finding your personal paradise and welcome your observations, thoughts and suggestions in comments below the story.

Don’t leave home without our Florida Keys Mile-Marker Guide
Editor’s Note: Campground rates are estimates (See note at the bottom of the story). During holidays and special events, expect premium markups and minimum stays at private campgrounds. Holiday rates are the norm for Lobster sport Mini-Season in July.

Excellent access to the ocean, although only a few sites are directly on the beach. The vegetation has grown fast between sites since it was renovated a few years ago, it’ll still be a few years before it’s dense and shady. 56200 Overseas Highway, Marathon. 2025 RV rates: $36 plus $7 daily utility fee for RVs. Campgrounds in Lower Keys and Key West

BAHIA HONDA STATE PARK (MM 36.8, Ocean and Bayside). This state park has it all: top-ranked beaches, snorkeling, scenic views, nature trails, boat launch, docks and kayak concession. Fishing is a big draw. The Sandspur Campground has reopened and now allows vans and pop-up tent trailers in addition to tents. The sites are gravel and have electricity, water, picnic tables and grills. There are 48 RV gravel sites in the Buttonwood Campground with electricity, water, picnic tables and grills. The Bayside Campground has eight (8) sites with a picnic table, grill and water but no electric, and vehicles must be no higher than 6 feet, 8 inches to get under the bridge. SUNSHINE KEY RV RESORT AND MARINA (MM 38.8, Bayside). Sunshine Key was obliterated by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and was rebuilt from scratch. This 75-acre island near Bahia Honda State Park is surrounded by crystal-clear water, kayak-accessible from waterfront campsites or from the large marina. This is a small city with all the amenities, including a restaurant, laundry facilities, playgrounds, boats, dockage and boat rentals on site. BIG PINE KEY RV PARK (MM 33, Oceanside). I camped here in my travel trailer when it was the Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge. We took a hike along the Long Beach Trail, which has a trailhead near the rustic sites, and came across a makeshift raft, presumably with Cuban refugees aboard. The beauty of this campground is access to nearby Looe Key Reef, a popular coral reef for diving and snorkeling. Boat ramp and dockage available. There are 172 RV sites with water and 30-amp electric service and 75 “rustic” sites for tents and RVs with communal water spigots. (Generators are not allowed.) Winter rates: $54-$200. 33000 Overseas Hwy Big Pine Key, FL 33043. Web site: Big Pine Key RV Park

BLUEWATER KEY RV PARK (MM 14.5). The most luxurious RV campground in the Keys, these RV sites are well-landscaped and privately owned, and many are available as rentals when the owners aren’t there. There are several waterfront sites, which get top dollar. Needless to say, with its proximity to Key West, the park stays full most of the winter. There is a three-night minimum, four-night minimums during holidays and special events. 2025 Summer RV rates: $119-$327 per night. Winter rates: $221-$361. For reservations, call 305-745-2494. GEIGER KEY MARINA RV PARK (MM 10.5, Oceanside). Going towards Key West, take a left at the Circle K on Boca Chica Road for 1.3 miles. This small RV park and marina is tucked away behind mangroves, and boat slips are available to campers. We stayed here a few years ago and loved the water access and on-site tiki bar. Follow Boca Chica Road a bit farther to Boca Cheeca Beach Park, popular with naturists but not officially clothing optional. There are only 37 RV sites at Geiger Key, all on a gravel base, with full hookups, laundry, rest rooms, a boat ramp and dockage. It’s worthy to note that the owner also owns the fabulous Hogfish Bar and Grill on Stock Island. 2025 RV rates: $170-$250. For reservations, call 305-296-3559. Web site: Geiger Key RV Park

BOYD’S KEY WEST CAMPGROUND (MM 5, Oceanside). Boyd’s is a popular choice for RVs seeking to be near Key West. It’s a short bike ride to get off Stock Island, and an easy pedal into the heart of Key West. Only Leo’s and Sigsbee are closer. Just a short walk for one of our favorite eateries, the Hog Fish Bar and Grill. Boyd’s captures that tropical flavor with coconut palms, a swimming beach and waterfront vistas. LEO’s CAMPGROUND (MM 4.5) Leo’s is on Stock Island and is the closest RV park to Key West, aside from Sigsbee Park at Naval Air Station Key West (restricted military). Convenient to all that Key West has to offer, by bicycle, bus or even walking. Leo’s is now RV-only — no tents. RV sites are cramped and include a picnic table, water, sewer hook-up, cable and 30/50-amp electric. Laundry facilities. Be prepared to back your rig into the campground from the street. 2025 summer RV rates:. $75-$105. 5236 Suncrest Road, Key West. Web site: Leo’s Campground

SIGSBEE RV PARK, Naval Air Station Key West (MM 2). 93 RV sites with hookups (water, sewer and 30/50 amp electric), 10 sites for tents, and 300 sites without hookups in the overflow area. Small beach with tiki huts, kayak rentals. Dockage and boat rentals, Wi-Fi. Pets OK (up to 2). Key West Naval Air Station, Key West. Call for rates. For campground reservations up to three months in advance, call (305) 293-4432. Only active-duty can reserve sites. For retirees, it’s first-come, first-served, but there is a huge overflow area. Web site: Sigsbee RV Campground
More about Naval Air Station Key West: NAS-Key West is a state-of-the-art facility for air-to-air combat fighter aircraft of all military services and provides world-class pier-side support to naval vessels. The runway is on Boca Chica Key
* Rates quoted in this story are estimates and subject to change. We based our estimates on a standard 25-foot travel trailer with no slide-outs occupied by two people. Larger rigs with slide-outs will cost more at many parks. Rates will likely be higher during holidays and special events.

You’re missing Sun Outdoors Islamorada. Relatively new; we stayed there last Thanksgiving. Pricey but very nice.
Thanks, Eric! I think I’ve seen it. The RV section is surrounded by colorful cabins on stilts, as I recall. I popped in there one day when it was nearing completion. The new Sugarloaf Key RV Park is also Sun Outdoors, and it looks like they have now also purchased an older park in Marathon. I need to get down there next month and check them out. Thanks again for the heads up!
