Few beaches in Florida escape the annual invasion of college students during Spring Break, and Disney World has come into its own as a destination even though the nearest beach is an hour away.
You’ll see the usual rowdy crowds of college students amassing in Daytona, Clearwater and Key West, but a tamer scene is anticipated in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach, where city fathers have been cracking down debauchery in recent years.
Spring Break has its roots in Fort Lauderdale, made famous by the 1960s beach movie “Where the Boys Are.” At the center of the action to this day, as it was then, is the Elbo Room bar at the corner of State Road A1A and Los Olas Boulevard at the main beach.

Top Florida Spring Break destinations
Orlando

Orlando tops the charts every year as the No. 1 Spring Break destination in Florida. The big attraction, of course, is the multiplex of theme parks with Disney World, SeaWorld, Legoland and Universal Studios leading the way.
This year’s big draw at Disney World is likely to be Big Thunder Mountain, which is reopening in time for Spring Break dash aboard the runaway train around the mountain and through redesigned and refurbished mines and dark caverns. (The ride was closed last year.)
Be aware that Disney World has implemented surge pricing in 2026 with single-day, one-park tickets ranging from $119 up to $209+ on peak days. Another form of demand-based pricing is in effect for Universal Studios. Look for competitive deals at SeaWorld and Legoland.
Orlando is great jumping off spot for visiting the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville and the beaches of Cocoa Beach and Daytona Beach, two popular Spring Break destinations in their own right.
With 500 hotels in the Orlando area, expect competitive rates. Compare rates on Hotels.com.
For camping near Disney World, check out Our picks within an hour’s drive. You also may find attractive camping options in Ocala National Forest.
Daytona Beach

The “World’s Most Famous Beach” has long been Florida’s most popular beach destination on Spring Break, and will remain so this year. Normally laid back New Smyrna Beach just to the south seems to be experiencing more of the overflow in recent years.
New Smyrna has the same weather, arguably nicer beaches and an Old Florida atmosphere with easy access to the north entrance to Canaveral National Seashore.
Still, Daytona Beach will never relinquish it’s crown. It’s a town that likes to party, kicking off peak season with Bike Week from February 27 – March 8, when things get a little crazy near the Main Street Pier and boardwalk and stay that way for two more months through Spring Break.
There are numerous scenic drives nearby if you want to get away. Try the Ormond Scenic Loop, or cruise to Ocala National Forest.
Campers can check out the best campgrounds near Daytona Beach. Check hotel rates in New Smyrna Beach, Daytona Beach and less-crowded Ormond Beach.
Hot Tip: Escape for a day from the Daytona mayhem to the pristine beaches of nearby Canaveral National Seashore, which you can access from A1A in New Smyrna Beach. A clothing optional beach is at Parking Lot No. 5.
Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach has bounced back from a couple of tough years dealing with hurricane damage, but all appears to be well in 2026 as this popular beach town reclaims its status as the epicenter of Spring Break in the Tampa Bay region on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Part of Clearwater’s undying appeal are the main beach and two awesome state parks nearby — Caladesi Island and Honeymoon Island in neighboring Dunedin. You should also bring your bicycle so you can enjoy one of Florida’s most appealing multi-use trails, the Pinellas Trail.
While you’re here, treat yourself to fresh seafood at any one of four Frenchy’s restaurants in Clearwateer and Dunedin. I had an outstanding grouper reuben sandwich at the Original Frenchy’s on Baymont Street just a few weeks ago. You’ll love the seafood here, fresh from the Gulf!
Like other beach hot spots in Florida this spring, finding a decent hotel rates could be challenging, so comparison shopping is a mandatory exercise. Here’s a link to Hotels.com for Clearwater Beach.

Key West

Key West is Key West, party capitol at the end of the world, 24/7 at any time of the year.
Not surprisingly, the revelry kicks up a notch during Spring Break as students swarm Duval Street and jam beaches and bars.
Arriving by car? Bring our Florida Keys Overseas Highway Mile-Marker Guide and check out the less-crowded Lower Keys as you get closer to Key West.
On your drive to Key West, so you might want to stop in Key Largo and snorkel or dive at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
Be ready to shell out big bucks for rooms. Explore your options in Key West on Hotels.com, but you may want to look for a room elsewhere in the Lower Keys.

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach is the surfing capitol of Florida with sprawling beaches and dozens of beachfront hotels. It’s also the closest beach to Disney World, Orlando International Airport and the Kennedy Space Center, making it the perfect destination for adventurous Spring Breakers.
There is plenty of action on these beaches and in the air around them. This is the Space Coast, after all, and with a little luck you might see a rocket launch.
Get your beach gear and souvenirs at world famous Ron Jon’s Surf Shop, one of at least five things to discover near Cocoa Beach.
Look for a campsite or a cabin at Jetty Park, if there are any left. Most Cocoa Beach hotel rooms are in the pier area, which rocks during Spring Break. Compare prices on Hotels.com.
Hot Tip: Avoid the pier area and venture further south on A1A to “Coconuts Beach.”
Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is a perennial favorite for Spring Break, and efforts by the city to quell the debauchery has meant a more orderly gathering of the tribe. It’s downright peaceful these days.
Fort Lauderdale and Miami may have the most predictably pleasant weather of any Spring Break destination in Florida, and you can never discount Fort Lauderdale’s enduring reputation as THE Spring Break mecca.
The world-famous Elbo Room is still the center of the action, as it has been since 1960 film “Where the Boys Are” put Fort Lauderdale — and the Elbo Room — on the map.
Consider less-crowded beaches in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Pompano Beach, Hollywood or Deerfield Beach. Still plenty of girls. Still plenty of guys.
The Florida Renaissance Festival takes place for eight weekends throughout February and March in Deerfield Beach, about 15 miles north of Fort Lauderdale.
Find a room in Fort Lauderdale on Hotels.com.
Hot Tips: Escape on a ferry out of Fort Lauderdale to Bimini or Grand Bahama Island. Hard Rock Live in Hollywood hosts several major acts this spring, including Rod Stewart, the Guess Who, The Offspring, Diana Ross and Eric Church.
Fort Myers Beach & Sanibel Island

Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island are on the rebound after being battered by multiple hurricanes a couple of years ago.
You’ll see plenty of rebuilding, but expect Spring Breakers to return this year. College kids like it here, and so do we.
Great beaches and outstanding kayaking will greet you. Be sure to visit Lovers Key State Park on Estero Island, where you can enjoy a fine beach, great trails and paddling opportunities.
Hot tip: Calusa Blueway: Kayak trail with maps and markers is worth exploring
Panama City Beach

‘Girls Gone Wild’ had its roots Panama City, but the city’s heyday as a premier Spring Break destination has been fading as local governments crack down on booze on and near the beach.
A special spring break ordinance was passed a few months ago targeting under-age drinkers that will be effective from March 28 through April 11 during the annual invasion of high-school kids.
Don’t get me wrong, Spring Break is still a thing here, just not as big as it once was. Consider also that the weather in Panama City is a real crap shoot. It was snowing here in January, and average temperatures in March run from lows of 54° F to highs of 72° F.
Hot Tip: Go further south on the Peninsula.
Best to avoid: Miami Beach
Miami Beach doesn’t want the “old” you. They want a “new” you, the healthy you.
‘Wake Up to a New March’ is this year’s Spring Break theme.
After years of rowdy crowds, mass arrests and even shootings, Miami Beach has dialed back the debauchery. “Expect curfews, security searches and bag checks at beach access points,” as well as multiple DUI checkpoints, the city warns.
If you do decide to visit Miami Beach during March:
- Parking garages in the Art Deco District will have flat-fee rates starting at $40 to $100!
- On-street parking and surface lots will operate under elevated pricing from $4 to $15 per hour
- Nonresident towing rate will be $548 — double the regular rate
- Beach access will be channelled through a limited number of security checkpoints
Miami Beach hotel rates are outrageously high anyway, and the cost of drinks in bars will shock you, and that should discourage all but the upper crust.
My advice: Skip it.
Hot Tips: Choose postcard-perfect Crandon Park Beach on Key Biscayne or spend a day in Everglades National Park.
